Glove Product Photography

Gloves are a product that are rather small and require certain photography techniques. In my time at West Chester Protective Gear, I developed new standards for product photography based on multiple major Retailer image specifications.

Apparel Product Photography

Apparel Photography requires a much larger space and lighting than smaller products. Background removal automation is more complex than smaller objects such as gloves.

Product Glamour Photography

High contrast lighting can have a dramatic effect on products. Typical product photography shows the object on a white background along with soft even lighting to remove any harsh shadows. Dramatic lighting purposely does the opposite for an artful effect.

In Studio Lifestyle Photography

When faced with Lifestyle Photography requests in July for Winter Gloves, the only option was to do a studio session and combine visual elements in Photoshop to create a convincing winter environment. I photographed a model with the product in a photo studio, added branding on top, and a stock photo in the back ground, along with layers of snow flakes.

Portrait & Event Photography

Photographing people in studio is both about getting good lighting and composition, and getting the subject to feel right about having their picture taken. Event photography and especially concert photography are all about working with available light and having an excellent knowledge of the photographic equipment being used prior to shooting.

Landscape Photography

One of my passions is landscape photography. Digitally composited panoramas can greatly expand the image area of cameras that have fully manual settings. While digital offers great ease of use and a highly productive work flow, older film like Fuji Velvia 50 was amazing for long exposures with soft highlights and extreme saturated color. An infrared filter with digital black & white creates a haunting landscape of contrasts.

Building a Photo Studio

Photoroom Scale Drawing

Prior to my employment at West Chester Protective Gear, product photography was restricted to a small pop-up light box placed inside a closet with only a pair of side fills and an overhead for lighting. For the most part, product photography was set up to only be able to photograph gloves. Apparel and other photography was outsourced to studio photographers or just not done.

West Chester has some of the largest retail customers in the safety apparel business, such as Lowe's, The Home Depot, Amazon, Walmart, Meijer, Tractor Supply Company, and others. Many of these retailers continue to up their game in a competitive environment by requiring more marketing material for the products that they carry. Much of the new marketing content requirements are for additional product photography, which is my responsibility at West Chester.

I was tasked with the dual task of meeting these additional photography requirements and expanding the company's internal capabilities to be able to photograph products larger than gloves, such as an entire new line of safety apparel which included safety vests, t-shirts, jackets, and rainwear. In order to fulfill what I was tasked with, I had to plan out a space for a new photography studio, spec out the items needed to create this new studio, and submit those items for budgetary approval.

Since the West Chester product line greatly expanded along with the additional photography capabilities and the new requirements from retail customers, it became necessary for me to develop and implement a new process for product photography requests along with better file organization for these photos. Standardized options for gloves and apparel were shown on the new Photography Request Form while still allowing for flexibility if other options were needed. Requirements like a unique identifier and a standardized file naming convention for each photographed product made archive searches more usable. Basic time estimates and a definitive menu of options created transparency for photography projects to help produce a better workflow for the whole team.

360° Photography for Major Retailers

In addition to building a new photo studio, West Chester also wanted to get ahead of the competition by adding 360° product photography capabilities and background removal automation. Some retail customers were starting to add this capability to their websites, such as Amazon, the Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart, where products with this capability would be featured more than products that did not meet the new required content specifications.

In the past, I had done animated GIF files with a series of product photos utilizing a turntable with incremental notches to provided a consistent angle from shot to shot. This was very time consuming and there were few opportunities to showcase this content other than at trade shows or in video. The GIF option was also too limited and time consuming to use with today's retailers. Automation and hardware were needed to optimize the new visual content. My research on 360° photography pointed me to using Ortery as the supplier of turntable hardware and automation software, which could be used with small products or larger objects like apparel. Output options for 360° content ranged from still images of each angle, GIFs, video, and interactive HTML. On the Walmart website, their private label 'Hyper Tough Gloves' showcase the products that I did in 360° as those products quickly went to the top of the page..
